Use These Actions Right Now to Avoid Teen Acne

It's an exceptional young person who will not develop acne in the course of their adolescent years. It's changing hormones during the teen years that makes acne almost universal. Once you understand why people develop acne you will be better prepared to avoid it altogether.

Acne results from plugged pores. An oily compound called sebum is developed by glands below the surface of your skin. This sebum rises to the skin's surface through pores.

But, your skin sheds old, dead cells which are replaced with new cells. The fatty sebum can cause these old cells to bunch together to block the pores.

These accumulating masses of oily dead skin particles finally start blocking or plugging up the pores several weeks before they are large enough for you to see. The sebum which is supposed to reach the surface of your skin will now be blocked and starts to accumulate inside the pores and glands beneath your skin. Bacteria begins to multiply and an infection is under way.

As the sebum accumulates and the infection gets worse you start to see changes to your skin. These accumulations become blackheads and whiteheads or pimples. You now have acne.

Acne is most prevalent in the course of the teenage years. Why is that?

The primary reason is hormonal changes. Both male and female adolescents produce the hormone testosterone. This in turn causes more of the oily sebum to be produced beneath the skin. It's the additional oily sebum that causes particles of dead skin cells to clump together in the pores to block the free flow of sebum.

After a handful of years, during the early twenties, the body can better regulate the reaction testosterone has on the glands so less sebum is created. A reduced amount of sebum results in less clumping of old cells and less probability for acne. While adults may still develop acne, their skin is drier and less elastic. Thus, the adult acne treatment will be a little different from that for teenage acne.

What should be done during the time of excess sebum production to reduce the occurrence of acne?

The most important thing is to keep the skin free of an overload of oils. This typically requires gentle cleansing twice a day. Many people recommend a gentle, non-alkaline cleanser as an alternative to normal soaps.

Eat nutritious foods. If you eat something that causes your face to feel like it is oozing oils, you should recognize that what you just ate is not going to help keep you free of acne. Eat unprocessed foods like fruits and vegetables, meats, whole grain breads, and dairy products. Avoid manufactured foods with plenty of sugar or high fructose corn syrup.

Teenage years are often stressful. And stress results in additional hormones that boost sebum flow. Learn to handle stress through exercise to help you work off daily stress.

Do not use oily or greasy makeup or skin creams. Adding oils to your skin only reinforces the effect of natural sebum and further helps block the pores.

You really can significantly reduce the chances of getting acne by keeping your skin free from excess oils.
